Emergency Fundraiser for Mona the Mama Cat

I was out Thursday night when I got a call from one of our volunteers. Her friend had been feeding a stray cat named Mona. Mona hadn’t shown up for a couple of days... and when she finally did, she was in horrifying shape.

She had a massive gash on her abdomen — one of the worst injuries I’ve ever seen on a living cat. Despite the pain, despite the trauma, Mona was still caring for her five newborn babies. Nursing them. Protecting them. Fighting to survive.

By the time we got the call, maggots had already moved in. Of all sizes. The wound was wide open. And yet she was *still* being a mama.

The caretaker was able to safely get her kittens, and then Mona, on Thursday evening. I picked them all up first thing Friday morning and rushed Mona to the vet. They immediately began working on her.
Mona was hooked up to IV fluids and IV antibiotics and placed in isolation. The vet said she would need to be hospitalized for several days and will likely require multiple surgeries to remove the dead and infected tissue. The damage is so extensive they couldn’t even determine where the original wound began or what caused it.

This is one of the most heartbreaking cases we've taken on — and yet, Mona is still fighting. And now, we fight for her.
